Domestic Violence Protecting Your Rights Is Our Responsibility

Oklahoma City Domestic Violence Defense Attorney

Fighting to Regain Your Peace of Mind

A domestic violence accusation can have far-reaching impacts on your criminal record, livelihood and reputation. The challenge with domestic abuse charges is that they all depend on the victim’s allegations, since it’s their words that got you in trouble in the first place. As such, you fall mercy to their accounts of the alleged crime scene. You must acknowledge that law enforcement can only assess a crime scene in domestic violence cases after a call for help is made. Thus, officers don’t ever actually see the alleged domestic abuse taking place and typically take the victim’s word over yours.

As a result, it may feel like all odds are against you. But we ask you to think again. At Coyle Law Firm, you can depend on our attorneys’ experience, insight and effective legal resources to help you get through this stressful situation. We can provide the personalized, hard-hitting legal defense you need to best overcome your domestic abuse allegations. With over 70 years of combined legal experience, our domestic violence defense lawyer knows what it takes to help you combat your charge.

What Is Domestic Violence?

In the state of Oklahoma, domestic violence (sometimes referred to as domestic abuse) is defined as any assault and battery between family members. Oklahoma’s Criminal Code states that domestic violence can only occur between:

  • Current or former spouses (and their spouses)
  • Anyone currently or formerly in a dating relationship
  • Relatives by blood or marriage
  • Parents
  • Children
  • Those living within a household

More specifically, the law states that “Any person who commits any assault and battery against a current or former intimate partner or a family or household member … is guilty of domestic abuse.” Those convicted of domestic violence may face up to 1 year in prison and/or fines of up to $5,000. For a second or subsequent offense, convicts will be penalized by up to 4 years in prison and/or up to $5,000 fines.

It’s important to recognize that domestic violence, or domestic abuse, can come in various forms. While most people believe this crime is only committed through physical violence, it can also present itself through the following actions:

  • Control
  • Physical Abuse
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Psychological Abuse & Intimidation
  • Emotional abuse
  • Isolation from friends, family and/or work
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Financial Abuse
  • Stalking
  • Technological abuse
